
During art club (their lunch recess, if they choose to attend) kids painted stripes onto wood squares I bought from SCRAP with the intention of turning them into mosaic magnets… good intentions dissolved and they became a cool piece of art and the rest of the pieces got re-donated for someone else to make their artistic dreams come true. Here’s another piece of artwork kids made that hangs above a hallway drinking fountain. I used up the Model Magic from the beginning of the school year – since it’s a consumable I don’t want to take it with me when I move out of the classroom at the end of the year. 13, I’ve got a few odds and ends to do before leaving. Whitman recently had a fundraising auction and a teacher asked if I had a project kids could work on to make something useful and beautiful to sell. and then dipped the folded filters into liquid watercolors.

Many people have a drawer in their kitchen full of all kinds of odds and ends. We folded out circles into fourths, eighths, twelfths, sixths, etc. Odds and ends are a mixture of different things, especially leftover or miscellaneous bits. I have a large Costco-sized bag of coffee filters I bought at SCRAP 4 years ago for 50 cents and have been using it for projects for years. Third graders in Room 16 worked on dip-dyed fraction circles… their teacher asked if I had a fraction art project they could do, since they no longer meet with me for art each week.
